Two Types of Ostomy Pouches
There are two general types of ostomy pouches – one-piece bags and two-piece bags. Both are equally effective and choosing one is really a matter of personal preference, doctor recommendations, and cost.
In one-piece ostomy pouches, the bag and the barrier or base plate, which connects to the stoma, are a single unit. Many people find this beneficial as you are less likely to experience connection issues or breaches with a one-piece device. One-piece devices also tend to be less expensive.
With two-piece pouches, the bag and the barrier are separate devices. Why? For starters, it allows the pouch to be removed and emptied or disposed of without removing the barrier, making it easier to attach a new pouch. Plus, it’s possible to examine the stoma simply by removing the pouch and not the entire unit. Two-piece designs are generally a bit more costly than one-piece. Additionally, it's important to make sure the barrier and the pouch are fully compatible and properly connected to prevent leakage. Those who opt for a two-piece pouch will be required to replace the skin barrier regularly.
Additional Supplies for Ostomy Care and Comfort
Along with a one-piece or two-piece pouch, many individuals also choose to use an ostomy belt, which provides added support and security by keeping the ostomy pouch snug against the body when moving around. It’s also important to create a safe, comfortable, and solid seal between the barrier and the stoma, which is done using barrier paste, available from a variety of different brands.
Proper Ostomy Care
Proper stoma care is important to avoid complications. It’s important to make sure the area has been carefully cleaned and is thoroughly dry before adhering the skin barrier or one-piece pouch to the body. It’s also a good idea to check your stoma regularly to spot signs of irritation or inflammation and be sure to purchase the right ostomy pouches and products to fit your needs. Of course, your doctor and care team should provide proper guidance to get you up to speed and comfortable using ostomy products.
